...this was an ideal world, and you could have an ideal set of tools to do all the file system backups on your various Unix (and Unix-like) systems. What facilities would this ideal toolset provide? What ``features'' of the various existing tools cause the most pain? Why? [Note that I'm distinguishing here between *backups* taken as insurance against hardware failure or carelessness, and *archives* taken deliberately for long-term preservation of key data.
