I recently sent out a request for documentation on unix interprocess communication routines (sockets and etc.). I received several replies which I replied to but am not sure the replies got through. Here are net mail that I received: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ From ut-sally!pyramid!pyramid.UUCP!csg Thu Oct 15 22:05:52 1987 Received: from usl.usl.edu (usl-va.usl.edu) by usl-pc.USL.EDU (5.52/6.0.GT) id AA02052; Thu, 15 Oct 87 22:05:39 CDT Received: by usl.usl.edu (5.51/6.0.GT) id AA08300; Thu, 15 Oct 87 22:05:35 CDT Posted-Date: Thu, 15 Oct 87 18:40:18 PDT Received: by sally.utexas.edu (5.54/5.51) id AA26570; Thu, 15 Oct 87 21:02:16 CDT Received: by pyramid.UUCP (5.51/OSx4.0b-870424) id AA29931; Thu, 15 Oct 87 18:40:18 PDT Date: Thu, 15 Oct 87 18:40:18 PDT From: ut-sally!pyramid!csg (Carl S. I have the CMU edition of that manual (4.3 BSD, Virtual VAX-11 Version of April, 1986) before me right now, and it contains (I cite): ------------- General Reference Berkeley Software Architecture Manual (4.3 Edition) PS1:6 A concise and terse description of the system call interface provided in Berkeley Unix, as revised for 4.3BSD. This will never be a best seller. An Introductory 4.3BSD Interprocess Communication Tutorial PS1:7 How to write programs that use the Interprocess Communication facilities of 4.3BSD. An Advanced 4.3BSD Interprocess Communication Tutorial PS1:8 The reference document (with some examples) for the Interprocess Communication facilities of 4.3BSD. ------- I've seen all of those (or their equivalents) in the documentation for both Sun-UNIX (don't remember the name of the manual containing them) and Ultrix (Programmer's Supplementary Documents, one of the 3 large folders, as opposed to the 4 small ones containing Unix Programmer's Manual). I've used the documents myself, and they've been most useful. They contain a lot of program examples. But I'm sorry, I have never seen online versions of these manuals, so I can't mail anything to you. (They might be supplied in the source license distribution, I don't know.) The copyright notice states that "Permission to copy ... as necessary for licensed use of the software is granted to licensees of this software, ...", so I guess you could borrow and copy them from someone. Collett 100 Teal Lane #15 Lafayette, LA 70507-4957 Thank you for your time and effort in responding to my request. It is unfortunate however that my university, USL, does not seem to have been given the documenation listed above from pyramid. The adminstration here is being very helpful in trying to find these docs but they have had no luck so far. Don Collett cs450116@usl-pc.USL ut-sally!usl-pc!cs450116
