[comp.unix.wizards] foo and fubar

BARBANIS@CS-UMASS.arpa (George Barbanis, Heldenprogrammer) (10/21/87)

My favorite is "psyrglz". It has obscure origins (from an American
Radio Relay League booklet) but it has the following features:
o Hard to type
o Hard to pronounce
o Has never been used as an acronym
These are highly desirable features, for you can't tell whether the
author of the program you're currently hacking has made use of
catchalls such as "foo","foobar", "qwerty", etc. (Oh well... one
could use grep I suppose but for a quick and dirty hack...)

My favorite is "plugh", one of the magic words from ADVENTURE.

Please explain the origin ... it looks like an interesting word ...

I knew someone would mention that one... I use xyzzy (pronounced 'zizzy?')
also from Adventure. It has the advantage that, in a multiuser system, no
one else choses the same scratch-file name as I do ... an "rm xyzzy*" is
usually quite safe.
