[net.news.newsite] UCSD site/management name changes

madden@sdccsu3.UUCP (Jim Madden) (08/28/84)

On September 1, 1984, the UCSD (University of California, San Diego)
academic computer will change the names of all of its machines to
conform to the name length limits of System V and to make it easier for
us to change the function of a machine without confusing our local user
population.

Although we hope to be able to provide a mail/name service soon to
eliminate most of the need for all these names to appear in the outside
world, for now other sites can use the new names shown in the table
attached to the end of this note. We will continue to accept and
forward mail using the old names for a couple of months.

Our dialin procedure has also changed slightly. Our machines are
served by a front end contention switch which must be told the name of
the required machine. From now on, the proper response to its
"Request:" prompt is the actual name of the desired machine rather than
any abbreviation. This is particularly important for people whose uucp
calls the machines involved. Proper L.sys entries (with the passwords
changed) for all machines are included below.

Name of site.

(The VAXen change between VMS and UNIX depending upon the
computing demands each quarter. This is what they are now.)

What the site is all about.

The Academic Computer Center provides computing services and
support for classwork, research, and other non-administrative
	applications.

We are happy to forward mail.

Willingness (or lack thereof) to connect to new sites that
want to join usenet. If you run uucp, tell if new sites can
call you, if you will poll them, what your policy is.
If on the arpanet, are you willing to forward news on to new
sites by establishing an arpanet usenet connection?

	We don't have arpanet.

We're generally receptive to new sites.
