Is it true that afio is faster than cpio? When I run it on a Convergent S/640 (25MHZ 68020), on 5.33 megs, afio takes 45 to 50 seconds longer than cpio. Any suggestions as to what I need to do to get the speed up? The reason I need afio, is that the CT box cpio doesn't handle the magnetic tape to well. Try afio -c 1000 [the rest]. Make sure you have 5megs available. Or you could ask Mark, he wrote it after all. He's at laidbak!mdb. Larry McVoy (lm%snafu@sun.com)

Are you using the -f flag to afio? Have you tried a large -c count? Other than the different ways of handling i/o buffering there shouldn't be a large difference in speeds. Les Mikesell
