Our company is converting to a Sequent as our primary development machine and there is currently a discussion over whether the limit on open files per process is too restrictive under Unix. The proponents of one side say that if it can be changed, change it. The opposition says that we shouldn't expect our Unix customers to have to do this. So, in an attempt to add fuel to the fire :-), I would like to ask some questions of the system administrators on the net. If you could take a few minutes to answer the following questions and send your responses to me, it would be appreciated. As always, Mr. Phelps, the responses will summarized and posted should the number of replies exceed 2. 0. What is your hardware/software configuration? (If you have several machines, a summary, please.) 1. Do you have the software to perform a reconfiguration of the kernal for each machine named above? 2. Do you have the experience or brazen confidence to build and install a new kernal? 3. Have you found it necessary to alter the open file limit per process? 4. If 'yes' to #3, a. What were the original and changed values for the limit? b. Why did you make this change? If you have any comments on this issue not addressed in these questions, please feel free to express your comments in 64K bytes or less. Thanks. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Keith Pyle ...!{rutgers | tut.cis.ohio-state.edu}!cs.utexas.edu!execu!keith Disclaimer: What??
