Perhaps someone knows what the nature of the problem I've been having with uucp. The connection fails during the initial connection handshake portion of the protocol. The remote side answers with "RLOGIN" rather than the expected "ROK": ... got that imsg >15\ 12\ 15\ 12\ 20< Shere=unicon\ 0imsg >\ 20< RLOGIN\ 0msg-RLOGIN exit code 0 My side is SunOS 4.0.1, the remote side is SVR3 with HDB uucp. I think the problem is configuration on the HDB side, but I'm not sure since I don't use it yet. Is there some obvious things to check? Other hosts calling the same site have no problems. Thanks in advance. ---------------- Kim Kempf, Microware Systems Corporation {sun, uunet}!mcrware!kim

The remote side answers with "RLOGIN" rather >than the expected "ROK": One possible problem (we saw this a few months ago) is that the remote site you're talking to doesn't have your system in their USERFILE (or the corresponding HDB (BNU) UUCP file). Your system MUST be in: Their /etc/passwd (i.e. there must be some UUCP login that you can use -- either your own system login, or nuucp, or something) Their L.sys file (your system name MUST appear here, even if they never call you) Their USERFILE (I think that when you appear in the above mentioned files, but not here, you get the "RLOGIN" message from UUCP (which has nothing to do with the BSD "rlogin" program, which allows you to log in to a remote machine via TCP/IP)) You may also need to appear in their L.aliases file, if your hostname is too long for their UUCP to deal with. Note, though, that I've only dealt with (as an admin, at least) BSD UUCP. For System V (HDB/BNU), your mileage may vary. Check the related files for problems, though. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | Steve DeJarnett | Smart Mailers -> steve@polyslo.CalPoly.EDU | | Computer Systems Lab | Dumb Mailers -> ..!ucbvax!voder!polyslo!steve | | Cal Poly State Univ. |------------------------------------------------| | San Luis Obispo, CA 93407 | BITNET = Because Idiots Type NETwork | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We experienced similar problems when two differing uucp login accounts shared the same user number. -- ----------------- Peter Palij uunet!apexepa!peter Apex Software Corporation peter@apexepa.uucp Phone: (412) 681-4343

I use HDB on a 4.3 BSD-Tahoe machine and have seen the problem before. If you do as we do and have a separate login for each site, e.g., Ufoo, and a master login with the same uid to own the files, e.g., UUCP, you must list both in the Permissions file for UUCP/TCP to work. Example: /etc/passwd: UUCP:*:26:40:Unix to Unix Copy Program:/usr/spool/uucppublic:/bin/sh Udcs:secret:26:40:DCS VAX A:/usr/spool/uucppublic:/usr/lib/uucp/uucico /usr/lib/uucp/Permissions: LOGNAME=Udcs:UUCP VALIDATE=uiucdcs SENDFILES=yes \ READ=/tmp:/usr/spool/uucppublic:/usr/local/src \ WRITE=/tmp:/usr/spool/uucppublic Another upshot of the dbm format passwd file is that changing the password for Udcs will make that first entry found with a getpwuid() call. Thus the files in /usr/lib/uucp will be owned by Udcs instead of UUCP. The fix here is to always re-change the UUCP password last after changing any other UUCP login. Paul Pomes "I'm the NRA!"
