[comp.unix.wizards] RCS source availability

narten@cs.purdue.EDU (Thomas Narten) (06/27/89)

Version 4 of RCS is now available from arthur.cs.purdue.edu in
pub/RCS/rcs.tar and pub/RCS/rcs.tar.Z. The latest version is
distributed under the same licensing policy as FSF software. It is
known to work on Suns (mc68000 and sparc) under the 3.x and 4.x
releases of Sun OS as well as on VAXen and other 4.2/4.3 based
systems. This version is in substantially better shape than the
version currently distributed with 4.{2,3} BSD derived systems.

How does the "Version 4" relate the "Version 4.1" and patches that
have been on uunet for quite a while. Is this something new and
different or just confusion?

From uunet:

Actually, I was a bit loose with my use of Version. The RCS on uunet
is old. In fact, all versions currently available are old with
respect to the version currently on arthur. I added a line to the
README file to indicate that this is version 4.2.

To those sites currently offering RCS for anonymous uucp/ftp: please
get the new version from arthur.

The version on uunet was copied from purdue on Jun 7. The version on
purdue was (and still is) dated Jun 5.

How can it be old?
