[comp.unix.wizards] Further name games

tale@pawl.rpi.edu (David C Lawrence) (10/26/89)

This hardly seems wizardly, yet this is where it's being discussed,
with some big names even chiming in. Sigh, hopefully the heat will be
fairly mild for perpetuating this ...

Uh oh. Path names. Okay, how about the following? (How I say it is
listed first.)

Directory       How I've heard it
=========       =================
  usr           yoo-zer  you-ess-ahr  oo-zer
  var           vahr  vair
  tmp           temp  tump(?)
  adm           ay-dee-em  ad-mihn  ay-duhm
  ucb           you-cee-bee  uhk-buh
  bin           bihn  bine
  dev           dehv  deev
  lib           lihb  libe
  lost+found    [... um, like, :-)...]

Files           How I've heard it
=====           =================
 .cshrc         [dot] seesh-are-cee seesh-irk
 .rhosts        [dot] are-hosts  roasts

Aside to the fellow who sent me a nice little dissertation on "char
*p", I couldn't find a path back to you. I say "care star pee",
though. :-) [And I _do_ say the first syllable of "character" to
rhyme with "care", too.]

Don't forget ``etc''.  I cringe everytime I hear someone say ``et-see''.  :-)

Sheesh! No kidding! Our old SA used to say it and then he got me saying
it too. Every once in a while my brain departs from controlled flight and
I say it again. Thank goodness I'm in charge of sys. admin. now... :-)
By the way does anyone say "ioctl" as i-o-c-t-l (all the letters spelled out)?

Well, it can always be pronounced as the King of Siam would! ;-}

Yea, the old sysadmin here called it et-see here also. I caught the bug.
Oh my God, Did I say sysadmin???? I meant SA! (Wart off some of
the flames). Especially the person who pointed out that I spelled
implementation incorrectly. Gee, and the rest of that article was
perfect. Awww, gee, I was almost a wizard... That one character blew
it for me. :-(

Guess I will have to quit my job and everything.

Hey, my job..., not Adelphi University, my programmer alalyst job...
I just thought of another one...

How do you tell a wizard? By how much money the company pays him TO STAY
TECHNICAL and not move into management where he becomes a pencil pushing
gghant chart maker-upper.
