Well I can at least boot from my rl02 cartridge on the Vax (thanks go to Chris Torek and Joe Beckenbach for their responses). Unluckily I am unable to load the mini-fs to the r80 (141 Mbyte winchester disk, it and the rl02 are controlled by the IDC controller on our 11/730). PROBLEM: I have a good r80 disk drive and IDC controller as best I can tell (passes all DEC diagnostics, and drive spins up fine); however, I am unable to load unix on this disk. I have tried loading the standard distribution from tape, and in addition booted unix on the rl02 to try to use the r80, with no success. On the other hand, when I was able to get the rl02 to boot an standalone minifs I had on it, I tried to do a newfs on the r80 with the following result... # newfs /dev/rb0h rb80 rb0h: hard error sn110142 csr=41094c1<R80,ECS0,ERR,DLT,OPI,CRDY,IE,DRDY> ds=0 write error: 110142 wtfs:I/O error # I formatted the disk with the DEC formatter just prior to do all of this. I had attempted to use the Unix one, but of the two TU58 cassettes I had, the generic 4.2 cartridge didn't know about rb drives (only hp and up), while our old cassette accepted rb(0,0) however it filled in the sector/track/cylinder defaults to all zero's, i.e. Device data: #cylinders=0, #tracks=0, #sectors=0 and while you can fill in the starting and ending track and cylinder number, you don't get to set the sector values, so I didn't attempt this. I'm considering trying to find somewhere else that I can make a cassette tape with known version of copy and format on it to test these again, but that's all I can think of at this point.
