[comp.unix.wizards] anonymous ftp, and ~ftp/etc/{passwd,groups}

meyer@cambium.uoregon.edu (David M. Meyer) (02/05/91)

	Why does ftpd want ~ftp/etc/{passwd,groups} for anonymous
	ftp (at least in SunOS)?

	Thanks (and sorry if this is a repost)

  Ftp needs /etc/passwd and /etc/groups (Does SunOS really use /etc/groups
instead of /etc/group? Interesting.) so that when it runs /bin/ls for the
"dir" command, ls can look up UID's and GID's and display the owners of the
files being listed.
