A friend of mine with a DEC 3100 has very recently gotten a very strange response to the "w" command: no kmem /dev/kmem seems to be there, /usr/adm/wtmp seems fine and /etc/utmp seems fine. But "w" gives "no kmem" Please direct responses to cheryl@puce.inria.fr and dias@vala.unice.fr Thanks much!

Spelling counts. The error occurs if the open(2) on /dev/kmem fails. So, if the file does indeed exist: 1. Make sure it's a special device file. 2. w(1) has read permission. On V4.0 and later this means that w(1) needs to run setgid and be in group kmem. > Please direct responses to cheryl@puce.inria.fr and dias@vala.unice.fr > Thanks much!
