I am interested in acquiring information on the 'gated'
internetworking protocol? Any papers and/or references
will be appreciated.

Gated is not a protocol, it is an Unix implementation of the RIP,
HELLO, EGP and BGP routing protocols. It is available for anonymous
FTP from gated.cornell.edu as pub/gated-2.0.1.8.tar.Z (and
gated-man-2.0.tar.Z).
