Oh my GAWD!! I went thru and cleaned up my passwd file, and changed the UID/GIDs for my regular users. I did not touch any systems users, just the staff and guests. Now uucico dumps core, with no messages, no log entry, no .Admin/Log entry, no NOTHING!! My login looks like: Ulogin:1234134141412:66:8:Unix Copy:/var/spool/uucppublic:/usr/lib/uucp/uucico Where: 66=Unique UID of this user and 8=/etc/group:uucp The files in /usr/spool/uucppublic are: total 130 drwxrwsrwt 2 uucp uucp 512 Apr 8 12:18 . drwxr-sr-x 13 bin bin 512 Mar 18 06:50 .. -rw-r--r-- 1 uucp uucp 0 Feb 8 1990 .hushlogin -r-------- 1 uucp uucp 0 Feb 8 1990 .rhosts -rw-r--r-- 1 Ulogin uucp 8483248 Apr 8 12:18 core This is nasty. Anyone have any clever ideas? (Oh, BTW, dbx says: % dbx /usr/lib/uucp/uucico warning: no symbols program terminated by signal ABRT (abort) And then I can only look at the assembly that barfed. (Of course.)) Bewildered, /rr -- "I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti." -Lector

Ok, ok, here's the poop. It was entirely my fault. Some time ago, I had the bright idea of including lines in my passwd file like: noone:*:-1:-1:#######THIS IS A COMMENT LINE#####:/: to seperate the various classes of users on this system. It *used* to work on SunOS round about 3.something with no bad effects. That does not seem to be the case anymore, though. Even though other programs, like login, seem to work, uucico barfs at the 'getpwnam' function. <sigh> I have removed the offending cruft from my passwd file and life is good, once again. Tanks to all who responded. /rr -- "I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti." -Lector
