Robert Fripp has certianly popularized the use of one reel of tape passing 
through two tape recorders.  He even manges to keep it working during a live
performance.  He did not, however, invent the idea.  It was invented, or at
least first used to seriously produce music, by Terry Reily.  Brian Eno learned
of it from Reily and showed it to Fripp when the two of them produced the
"No Pussyfooting" album.
