Well, let's keep this going. I tend to go in cycles of music I like to listen to; partially because I'm lazy and it's easy to just pop the same cassette into the machine again, but partially because I really get into something for a while. For example, when I first heard music by David Qualey (modern classical guitarist) I played solely his stuff for days on end. Just fantastic. Two artists I find myself listening to an awful lot recently are John Klemmer (esp Cry and Brazilia) and Ricky Lee Jones (both albums). I'm a saxophonist by avocation, and I find Klemmer's work quite stunning at times. Brazilia is very soothing, and, while he has sometimes been labelled as "too commercial" (esp after Touch and Barefoot Ballet), I find a great deal of power and solace in his music. Ricky Lee has also been pigeonholed outside of the mainstream of jazz by some, but she is one of the few modern vocal artists that I can bear to listen to. Each tune is a story, told in a very unique way, showing deep emotion and understanding of life's turmoil. How about it? Do other folks go in cycles like this? Can we get some pans or raves on these or other artists? I'm interested in hearing from someone other than the "critics" in Down Beat. Cheers, chris
