Noone from the New York area seems to have gotten involved in this... WBGO (88.3) out of Newark is the only full-time jazz station in the area, but it is full time, they cover the gamut, are an NPR affiliate and have been increasing their power since the WRVR turned into plastic country WKHK. WVNJ (around 99?) broadcasts (or used to) marathon late-nights with Les Davis (former DJ at RVR), live from the Greene Street Cafe. Which brings me to clubs. Jazz has sprouted in New York, to the extent that there are dozens of clubs, from lofts to bars to snazzy East Side hangouts. West 52 Street is also called Swing Street. There are several lofts around 23rd Street and Greenwich Village now probably has more clubs operating than it did in the height of Bohemia. Even the Bottom Line, rock club showcase non-pareil, is booking jazz acts. All of folks in New Jersey who might think about jazz as a result of this newsgroup's discussion, why not hop into your car Friday night and bop into town? Alan Berenbaum

Arthur's Tavern, in the West Village (Grove Street just west of 7th Avenue South), has for many years had a band called the Grove Street Stompers that plays Dixieland jazz there Monday nights from about 9:30 PM to 1 AM or so. No cover, no minimum. The place is tiny, and does not serve food. The music is great fun -- the exact composition of the band varies but it is usually approximately six pieces: clarinet, trumpet, trumbone, piano, bass, and drums.
