THE PASSION ACCORDING TO ST. JOHN, Johann Sebastian Bach
To countless listeners, the music of J. S. Bach is supreme. The _P_a_s_s_i_o_n
_A_c_c_o_r_d_i_n_g _t_o _S_t. _J_o_h_n is dramatic and complex and holds universal appeal. It
sings the tragedy and glory of mankind, and the beauty of the music alone

ORCHESTRAL MUSIC OF THE BAROQUE ERA
Enormously enjoyed and lauded in its debut last season, the all-orchestral
program will again turn the spotlight on Music of the Baroque's superb
chamber orchestra. The Baroque orchestral literature is highly diversified
and abundant. It is a special treat to hear it performed by "the special-
ists." This year's offering will include Vivaldi's _C_o_n_c_e_r_t_o _f_o_r _T_w_o _T_r_u_m_p_e_t_s
_i_n _C and Purcell's Suite from _D_i_o_c_l_e_s_i_a_n.

VESPERS OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN (1610), Claudio Monteverdi
Dazzlingly rich in vocal and orchestral color, the _V_e_s_p_e_r_s _o_f _1_6_1_0 is one of
the most exquisite compositions of all times. It is a marvelous compendium
of contrasting styles of the period, coupled with revolutionary harmonies and
sparkling melodic lines. Performed only rarely because of its complexity,
the work has enormous appeal to the listener of today.

ODE ON ST. CECELIA'S DAY, Henry Purcell
FIFTH BRANDENBURG CONCERTO, J. S. Bach
Henry Purcell, one of the greatest of all English composers, is renowned for
his gift of dramatic and musical invention. In his wonderfully lyric and
celebrative _O_d_e _o_n _S_t. _C_e_c_e_l_i_a'_s _D_a_y, dedicated to the patron saint of music,
he praises music, the universal tongue. Bach's _F_i_f_t_h _B_r_a_n_d_e_n_b_u_r_g _C_o_n_c_e_r_t_o is
a fine showcase for the unparalleled talents of Igor Kipnis. Its delightful
combination of elegance and spirit make it a perennial audience favorite.
