[net.cooks] marshmallow fluff

laura (05/20/82)

Thank you, one and all, for the replies on MARSHMALLOWS. Note: I now know
*how to spell it correctly!*. I think that I can summarize the results
for interested parties.

First of all, though, utzoo is the Zoology Unix System at the
University of Toronto. (Sorry to those people who know of a great store
in Salt Lake City...)

Marshmallow Fluff used to be called *Marshmallow Fluff* (naturally) and
sold in butter tubs in Toronto about five years ago. There may still be some
in this form in Waterloo today. Other places sell Marshmallow Creme in jars
which they keep near the peanut-butter. Two supermarkets I tried didnt
have any --- but they *had heard of it*, so i am getting warmer. A friend
who runs an ice-cream store says that he imports his marshmallow fluff
from Boston, and that all others are inferior in quality. He wont sell me
any -- maybe I can get the address of his supplier and see if DEC in Merrimac
is interested in getting into the marshmallow distribution business.

There seems to be marshmallow fluff in the California and other
places far south of here -- as well as Californians who *actually eat* the
stuff on bread. They say it sounds revolting but it tastes good. I am
using extreme restraint in *not describing* what the person who eats
marshmallow fluff with *anchovies* reminds me of .... Ice cream supply
houses may be the best way to get this stuff. There is marshmallow
cream topping available in Canada -- it doesnt seem to have the same
consistancy as the fluff I was told to use -- and it costs megabucks
for a large quantity --12 oz for $2.05 yesterday.

I have been told from non-Californian marshmallow eaters who
have only noticed how much they missed their gooey messes since I sent
my note that it probably would be ok to put marshmallows in a blender,
or in a small container and beat the .... out of them. Several people
want to come and watch this feat -- note I only have a one-bedroom apartment,
come in advance to get a good seat when I announce a marshmallow-killing
party.

I actually think that it would be better to put a few marshmallows
into a clean beaker and put the lot on a retort stand over a bunsen burner,
I know, it doesnt sound as much fun!

Thanks again to all who replied.
