[net.music] The Residents on USA Cable TV

rlr (10/31/82)

I found out about this to late to post it. The Residents (actually "video"s
of their work) appeared on USA Cable TV (Night Flight?), Sat. night, Oct. 30
at 11PM and 2AM (the next morning, I presume---which 2:00 would it be: *at*
the time you moved your clock back or an hour later?).

Not only didn't I get a chance to post this item in time for everyone to get
perhaps their first/only chance to witness the genius of the Residents, but I
missed both showings myself. (I don't have cable; I hardly watch my B&W at
all!) Did anyone in netland get to see the Residents on TV??? What did they
play??? I have seen some videos of earlier Residents work ("Hello, Skinny",
"Third Reich 'n' Roll") as well as their more recent one-minute "commercials"
taken from their "Commercial Album" (one of three greatest albums of all time,
according to one netnews "critic"). I was hoping to see some new stuff,
perhaps from the "Mark of the Mole"/"Tunes of Two Cities" albums. *ANYBODY*
who got a chance to see this, *please* get in touch with me.

Well Rich, I got to see the videos. They were three of the commercials
from the greatest album yet, "The Commercial Album". The only video title
I remember was Moisture/The Simple Song, but I could tell you if I can
find my cassette of the album. I thought all three were great. Lot's of
eyeballs and a cameo from your favorite and mine, Snakefinger! I wish
there had been forty videos from the album, instead of just three.
After the Residents, they showed the "Genius of Love" video from the
Tom Tom Club and a piece on twin women calling themselves (what else?)
Twin Art. They were exactly what you would have expected from so-called
artists, arrogant and stupid. Their videos were stupid and without
content. They only good thing about these girls is that they write
and sing neat songs. The song from the video "Poodle Paper" (about
toilet paper for society dogs) was excellent, vocals along with a
single, muddy electric guitar. Interesting sound, stupid ideas.
I only wish there could be more artists around like The Residents,
Eno, and Kanet Splane. Too bad there aren't.
