For those of us who can't find "hot oil", as called for in Hot and Sour Soup and other recipies, I've just found... Hot Oil Heat 1/3 c. vegetable oil in a small pan. When it starts to smoke, stir in 2 Tablespoons crushed hot red pepper flakes or 3 Tablespoons powdered hot red pepper. Simplicity! Dave Ihnat ihuxl!ignatz

I'm sure that works. If you're interested, however, in a Chinese cooking class I took a few years ago I was told to make hot oil in the same way, but using peanut oil and Chinese dried hot peppers. The peppers are used whole, and discarded after the oil is ready.
