[comp.sources.wanted] Snobol compiler/interpreter wanted

johnl@ima.UUCP (08/18/87)

A friend of mine is looking for a PD Snobol compiler/interpreter that will
run under VMS and/or Ultrix. If anybody has such a beast, please let me
know. (No flames about Snobol, he has ~2 million lines of code that he
would like to run. I don't use the language.)

-Israel
[Various versions of Snobol4 have shown up in the DECUS library; I used
one for the PDP-10. Also, Dewar Information Systems near Chicago has had
many Snobol implementations for sale, perhaps one would do. And finally,
Snobol4 is written in a low level macro language, you might still be able
to get a copy of the SIL macros from Griswold et al. and make them work.
Any other ideas? -John]

DISC Corporation was, accurately, memtioned as a possible source of Snobol4
or Spitbol. Their address is:

Mr. R. Goldberg, Dewar Information Systems Corporation,
9901 Derby Lane, West Chester, IL, 60153,
312-344-1025

I have no connection with DISC. I am acting only to assist the Usenet community.

The Macro-Spitbol compiler is probably what you want. It's a Snobol4 compiler
written in a 'generalised' assembly language intended for macro expansion. It
took me a week to bring up a simple-minded translation for the 68000. It was
written by Tony McCann (University of Leeds, UK) and Robert Dewar (ex
University of Illinois I believe). I think its available for a nominal fee to
non-commercial users.

You can write to Griswold's current development team at
   icon-project@arizona.edu {allegra,ihnp4,noao}!arizona!icon-project

Some Snobol4 information is available at arizona.edu ; ftp there and
get the file snobol4/README .

There's an Icon and Snobol4 conference on BIX which you can get at by
joining other.langs/icon.snobol .

Catspaw, Inc., is the principal vendor of Snobol4 stuff. Contact them
at (303) 539-3884 voice, (303) 539-4830 BBS, PO BOX 1123 Salida CO 81201 USA
papermail. Ask for a free sample copy of "A SNOBOL's Chance."

I'd call Catspaw and see what they have.

This info is from "The Icon Newsletter", Comp Sci dept., U of Arizona,
Tuscon AZ 85721 USA. There is also a "Snobol4 Information Bulletin"
presumably published at the same place.
