We are designing a system and want to give the (ab)users the capability of using the shell for certain tasks (e.g. editing personal files, reading mail, etc.). The problem is that the users have to have access to certain system files through the application but we don't want them modifying those files arbitrarily using the shell. We have a command called rsh (restricted shell) which restricts "cd", environment variables, and some other things, but doesn't place any restrictions on command arguments (so "vi /etc/passwd" works). What we are actually looking for is being able to let the users do anything they want within their "home tree", so that they can create and change directories, files, etc. in their own area, but can't go higher than their home directory. We are anticipating having to write a special shell for our system and are basically looking for a starting place rather than starting from scratch. Does anyone have any PD stuff out there that with a little modification would provide the capabilities we need? -- Bill Sears ...!uw-beaver!ssc-vax!voodoo!bcsfse!bill FSE development project All I ask of life is a constant and exaggerated sense of my own importance.
