[comp.sources.wanted] Remote Access software needed

k9iu@iuvax.UUCP (12/08/87)

I am looking for some software that will run on a PC XT that will enable
me to redirect the input from the keyboard to the serial port. Also,
I would like to redirect output from the screen to the serial port. In
short, I would like to be able to call up a remote PC using a modem, and
essentially "take over" what it is doing from the serial port.

The remote PC will be running a bulletin board that will be using other
serial ports -- moreover, the program writes directly to the screen, and
uses function keys to execute commands. The "remote access" of the BBS
 is for system administration.

I have heard of a commercial product known as "Carbon Copy" that supposedly
performs this task, but I am hesitant to purchase it for several reasons.
First, I understand that the software is sufficiently encrypted so that it
can only be used from one machine, and that two copies of the product are
necessary -- one for each end. Since the costs of each copy are substantial,
this would give at best an inconvenient result for a large expenditure of
money. Does anyone know of any other products that allow remote access?

 Thanks in advance,

 Patrick Barkey

If you're dealing with well-behaved programs, the built-in CTTY
feature of DOS might be all you need. I don't know how much better
Carbon Copy will work if your target programs aren't well-behaved.

I have used a product known as PC Anywhere with great success. This program is
a product of Dynamic Microprocessor Associates, Inc. and is distributed by
       EDK Computer Corp.
       764 Middle Country Rd.
       Seldon, N.Y. 11784
       SALES 516-736-2111
       TECH 516-736-0500

The program available for about $100.00 or less is able to handle the
functions you request and alot of nice add-ons are included. The program
has software for both ends and is easy to install and to use.

I have no association with DMA other than being a satisfied user.
