Core Wars is a game in which "hostile programs engage in a battle of bits". The game was first described by A.K. Dewdney in Scientific American May '84 to which implementation guidelines were available. There follow a second article in March '85 after which a Standards Commitee was formed who produced a second set of updated guidelines in May '86 and a tournament was held at the Computer Museum in Boston. There was then a followup in Sci.Am. Jan '87. I was on the commitee and have copies of all the articles and guidelines. I have not been involved since the commitee guidelines were produced. There is a CW Newsletter and the International CW Society. The Jan '87 article published mailing address for both. CW Newsletter: William R. Buckley, 5712 Kern Drive, Hunting Beach, Calif. 92649 Int. CW Soc.: Mark Clarkson, 8619 Wassall St, Wichita, Kan. 67210-1934 As far as I know, these addresses are still current and that the '87 tournament was carried through. The CW Soc . should be able to provide guidelines for 4 US$. A second older game called DARWIN inspired CW I believed. A complete describition of the game was given by G.A. Edgar in Computer Language April '87. I have provided just the references. I can provide more info if asked but my knowledge comes the above references which can be found in any well stock library either bound or on microfilm. -Ant
