A good paper on that reviews some older algorithms and presents some newer algorithms that are good for output on monochrome papyrus displays (i.e. printing), just arrived in the mail today: Knuth, DE, "Digital Halftones by Dot Diffusion", ACM ToG (Transactions on Graphics), October 1987.
