                              Snickerdoodles

       Ingredients

       1 cup       soft shortening
       11/2 cup    sugar
       2           eggs
       23/4 cup    sifted flour
       2 tsp       cream of tartar
       1 tsp       baking soda
       1/2 tsp     salt
       4 Tbs       half and half sugar and cinnamon, leaning
                   towards extra sugar

       Method

       Mix the sugar, egg, and shortening together thoroughly.
       Sift in the flour, cream of tartar, baking soda, and salt.
       Chill the resulting dough.

       Roll the dough in balls the size of small walnuts and roll
       each ball in the cinnamon-sugar mixture until completely
       coated.  Put the balls on an ungreased baking sheet about 2
       inches apart.  Bake for 8-10 minutes at 400o .  The cookies
       will puff, then flatten out with crinkled tops.  They should
       be lightly browned but still soft.  Cool and hold for some
       time before serving.
