jeff@necntc.nec.com (Jeff Janock) (04/27/88)

Hello,

1) Where are all the MAC binaries/sources archived?
   Multiple locations? FTP'able?

2) Are there any BBS systems running under MAC/OS?

Thanks, -jj

Sure are:

1) Red Ryder Host. Last I heard was that you got it for free if you bought
Red Ryder. Don't know too much about it, but it's supposed to have a
   lot of features.

2) WWIV (or "World War IV"). I've been examining this one for the last couple
of days, and it looks good. It's a port of an MS-DOS program, but a port
that took at least a year to write. A nice feauture is that uploads and
posted messages "credit" your download time. What I think is a limitation
is that you can only have 20 message groups and 20 file directories.

3) The Mansion - know nothing about this one.

4) HyperBBS, by Harry Chesley. A bulletin board program written in HyperCard,
with XCMDs for serial port support and things like Xmodem. _Very_ easy to
set up (took me about half an hour), and the sysop has a neat HyperCard
button and field interface. Not too many features though, and a bit on
the slow side (noticeable at 1200 bps). And the user has a plain vanilla
   CRT type interface.

5) Mouse Exchange. I've been trying to get my hands on this one, but without
luck sofar. Can't tell you anything about it, although it's rumoured to
   be a bit slow.

6) MacWorkStation. Yeah, this is the interesting one! Maybe even two ...
I have heard from a reliable source that at least two people are working
on bulletin board programs that use MacWorkStation as the front end for the
caller. This means the caller sees windows, menus, graphics, does local
editing, etc. etc. This is supposed to be HOT! These last two will
probably be commercial programs though ...

7) Finally you'll want to know that Red Ryder Host, The Mansion, WWIV and
Mouse Exchange can all be made "Fidonet compatible" with the Tabby drivers
written by Michael Connick. Commercial ($45), I bought them my self to
Macify the Fidonet BBS I recently became the sysop of.

That should get you started!
