[comp.sources.wanted] ai languages on unix wanted

gabe@viusys.UUCP (Gabe Nault) (05/11/88)

I am starting a Master's thesis and am interested in finding
an artifical intelligence language that either runs under Unix or
can be ported to a Unix system. I hope to be able to find something
more than lisp or xlisp. I have heard of a language called STAR, which
is originally from NASA. The problem is that they want $2000 for this
software, (and you thought that all government sponsored software was
public domain). If anyone knows of any languages such as this or perhaps
a prolog that runs on UNIX please let me know.
	Thanks in advance
	Gabe Nault

One language that you could consider is CLIPS, a forward-chaining language
implemented in C which is available from COSMIC (at the Univ. of Georgia,
404-542-3265). It was developed for NASA.

How about C++?

Steve

PS: What makes a language "an ai language"? I thought we were just
programming here. Oh well.

Look at PopLog. It's got an okay Common Lisp and a Prolog, plus Pop-11.
It's cheap or free to academics.

Univ. of Edinburgh's C-Prolog (v 1.5) is a very good implementation
of Prolog that runs on UNIX. Contact: Fernando Pereira / David Warren
of SRI International, Menlo Park, California; or David Bowen / Lawrence
Byrd of Dept. of Artificial Intelligence, Univ. of Edinburgh.

AT&T's P-Shell (v 2.1) is a Prolog-based knowledge programming environment
that runs on C-Prolog and other similar Prolog interpreters and compilers.
Contact: AT&T UNIX System Toolchest, 1-800-828-UNIX or dial 1-201-522-6900
and login as "guest" to the AT&T 3B computer that hosts the Toolchest
electronic catalog.

Try POPLOG: three "AI languages" (LISP, PROLOG, POP-11) in a single
environment. Nice online help, nice interfaces between the languages
(or at least, more often than not), and Common Lisp. Contact Robin
Popplestone at UMass Amherst.

Thanks for the plug. However, I must make a couple of minor corrections.
1. Standard ML is also available in Poplog as an optional extra.

>>It's cheap or free to academics.

2. It is (was) free only to SERC/Alvey-funded academics in the UK, though
academic discounts for others are generally large (e.g. 80 to 85%).

>>Try aarons@cvaxa.susx.ac.uk

3. Although Poplog is developed at Sussex University we don't handle
most of the distribution. We distribute only for UK academics, who should
