As you know, Christmas is less than two months away! My mouth is already watering for my favorite Christmas cheer -- a TOM AND JERRY!!! Perhaps you midwesterners are well acquainted with this potent and tasty drink (it's a favorite in my home state, Wisconsin). It's less well-known elsewhere. The recipe is a two-parter -- first, the batter, then, the drink. TOM AND JERRY BATTER -------------------- 1 pound confectioners sugar 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar or baking powder 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg (ground) 1/4 teaspoon of cloves (ground) 5 LARGE eggs Combine dry ingredients. Separate eggs, beat whites until stiff. Mix thoroughly 7/8s of the dry mixture with the egg whites. Beat yolks for a while, mix remaining dry mixture into yolks. Combine the two mixtures by hand. Store in freezer. TOM AND JERRY DRINK ------------------- In a large coffee mug, combine two tablespoons of Tom and Jerry batter, one ounce of brandy, and one ounce of rum (clear or brown, doesn't matter). Fill to rim with boiling water, stir. Sprinkle nutmeg on top. (note: If you can obtain fresh, whole nutmeg and grind it yourself, do it! The aroma knocks you out! It's far superior to the tins you buy in the grocery. A good source for fresh whole nutmeg and other heavenly spices is a company in Milwaukee called The Spice House, (not sure of address -- call first)) Comments or questions?
