[comp.sources.wanted] ELM 2.0 Wanted

david@bdt.UUCP (David Beckemeyer) (08/20/88)

I've said it before but I didn't get any response, so here goes again...

I see all the discussion about Elm 2.1. I still have 1.5!

Where can I get Elm 2.0 sources? Please help if you can.

Sorry, but you can't right now.

A few months ago, discussion in this news group led to a cooperative effort
to fix up the latest version of Elm (version 2.0), which had leaked out
of the source code keeper's possession to a few people. Several people
volunteered to test this version of Elm, which was renamed 2.1 alpha.
It was decided to not release any such preliminary versions to the world
at large lest there be all manner of buggy versions of Elm floating around
in the UNIX Universe. To release 2.1 publically would probably result in
lots of confusion, it was argued here.

I guess it falls on me to answer. As part of the transition from HP
and Dave Taylor to public support and the Elm Development and Testers
group on Usenet, Elm is now being tested at version 2.1.

Version 1.5 is the last official version released.
Version 1.7 went through some beta's but was never officially released.
Version 2.0 was leaked from HP and some people have it, we took the
official 2.0 release and are fixing it and calling it 2.1. Thus 2.1 is
going to be the official version of 2.0.

We are working to remove system dependencies as well as fix bugs. A few
new feature appear to be creeping into 2.1, but those might be held off
for 2.2.

Version 2.1 is scheduled for release to comp.sources.unix in early
September. However, there seems to be a slight problem as our
coordinator (Eric) seems to have gotten too busy changing jobs.
The testers are working away on the system and many patches have
appeared in the elm developers mailing list.

If Eric does not resurface this week, I propose that we appoint a
temporary coordinator to get version 2.1 off the ground and then settle
things with Eric et. al. after the release is out. (I guess I can say
something as I was one of the people voted on for coordinator).

We seem to have had some problem with the elm mailing list as some of
the original testers are not getting the test group messages. Those
people can contact me directly and receive copies of the message file
to date and/or the elm source. I now have a list of the alpha people,
so only alpha people need apply.

The official release of 2.1 should still go to comp.sources.unix, but
now in mid september due to the delay. Rich, I am sure, has a posting
delay, so I would expect to see it in late September to early October.

If you have specific questions, please e-mail me directly and I will
try to reply as time permits.
