freb (12/19/82)

These are the sugar cookies my mother has made for Christmas for as
long as I can remember.

                      Momma's Sugar Cookies

     3 cups flour
     1 1/2 tsp baking powder
     1/2 tsp salt
     1 cup sugar
     1 cup soft butter
     1 slightly beaten egg
3 Tbl cream or evaporated milk
     1 tsp vanilla

Stir together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar. Cut in
the soft butter until the mixture is fine and crumbly.

Add the egg, evaporated milk, and vanilla; mix well. If the mix-
ture is dry (it probably will be), add a little more of the eva-
porated milk, until it is about "Play-Do" consistency.

Refrigerate the dough for a little while to make it easier to
work with.

Flour a board and roll the dough thinly. Cut out cookies and put
on ungreased cookie sheets. Sprinkle with sugar. Bake at 400F
for 5-8 minutes.

Makes lots of cookies!

Notes

You can make colored sugar by putting a drop of food coloring in
about 1/2 cup of sugar, and stirring very well.
