[comp.sources.wanted] Wanted: AD&D

"John_R._Luce"@XEROX.COM (12/15/88)

After several years of talking about how great it would be to have software
to help me be a better GameMaster, Several of my friends and I have decided
to do something about it, when we're not writing code for our employer.

What I am looking for is machine readable files, preferably in ASCII text
with data from the various AD&D sources. Ie. tables of monsters and related
statistics, tables of Thief success/fail percentages, etc. In short any and
all information that one would normally have to look up in one of the various
books. I figure that out of all the people out there, and all the time
that the game has been out, someone MUST have entered the data into a computer,
The format of the data is not important, in that we could translate the format
for our own uses.

We will be writing this software under SCO Xenix, so please don't suggest the
various MS-DOS software packages that are GM Aids, unless they contain information
in the form of data files as mentioned above.

Thanks in advance to any pointers you can give me.

WHat you are about to do is VERY illigal. You WILL be sued by TSR. I ought
to know they tried to sue me too!

Just a warning... They could care less about their customers!

What you might look into is a scanner. Many of the scanners on the
market are capable of reading text and doing a good job of converting it
into ascii (or other format) files. If there are enough of you doing
this you could all chip in and purchase one for a small amount of money
apiece.

I hope you realise that copying the tables from D&D is a copyright violation.
It's just the same as pirating software.

Besides, D&D is so full of crocks you'd do better making your own tables
and game system up from first principles. I'd recommend the system Steve
Jackson came up with for his first FRP game, The Fantasy Trip, as a source
of ideas. It's the cleanest and simplest system I've ever seen. Unfortunately
it's now out of print, due to a dispute with Metagaming. Maybe you can pick
up a copy in a used book store or something.

I'd post the specifics, but that'd be a violation of copyright.
