[net.cooks] Low-Sodium recipes and Sodium in Food

kathleen (01/28/83)

I went grocery shopping today and was surprised to find that a lot of foods
which I normally don't buy due to the salt and sugar added to its contents
are now being manufactured without these additives. I think that a lot of
money is being spent on advertising for these foods, since the cans and
packaging are well-marked with the fact that the food contains low- or no-
sodium. There are a variety of foods which I can think of which contain
no added salt: potato chips, butter, canned tomatoes, assorted canned
veggies, frozen foods, etc. Read the package. It may take longer the
first few times you go shopping, but if you are concerned, this extra time
may be worth you while. In the section at the market where the diet foods
are, you may find more of a selection of sodium-free foods, but at a higher
price. Another way to cut down is to buy your veggies fresh and cooks them
yourself in a steamer or in boiling water. As for recipes, just don't add
salt when it is called for and use as many recipe items that don't contain
added salt and you should be able to cut down.

Happy eating!!
