I have been asked to give a synopsis of all of the information I have received on TIFF. I am very grateful to all those who replied. A document on the TIFF standard, from Aldus and Microsoft, is available via anonymous ftp from surya.waterloo.edu [129.97.129.72] as "/doc/tiff.Z". There is also a _Dr. Dobb's Journal_ article (May 1988) on the subject. The article, "Handling Image Files with TIFF", refers to a software library available for the Mac and for the PC which provides easy management of TIFF files. I called up DEST Corporation, which makes the library for the PC, and they informed me that the offer extended in _Dr. Dobb's_ (free for the asking) no longer applies; the charge is now $25. If anybody has a copy of this already, I would most appreciate a posting, or could send a check for a disk copy. If no one already has it, I suppose we could take up a collection (I believe it is PD, so no flames, please). I think if we gathered interested people together we could make it about 5 cents per person :-) There is also a more readily-available, though less immediately usable, bit of code available. "PBM", which is a graphic file format converter, is available as "pbm.tar.Z" by anonymous ftp from expo.lcs.mit.edu. It provides for conversion from various file formats (including TIFF and PCX (PC- Paintbrush)) to an intermediate format, ".PBM". I hope this compendium of information is useful. Anybody interested in making a contribution towards a purchase of DEST's library, or who already has a copy, please respond by e-mail. _____ Emery Berger (emery@cs.utexas.edu) _____ Dept. of Computer Science _____ University of Texas at Austin _____ Austin, TX 78741
