The founder of Heavy Metal magazine said something like the following... At some scientific conference it was suggested that a requirment for a technological society was the production/use of heavy metals. This was supposed to be the crucial step to becoming technologically evolved. I am not quite sure how this connects to a style of music, but I think it has to do with the outlook of these people. The images that go along with heavy metal music seem to be technologicly oriented is some way (cars, sexually active robots) or indirectly associated to technologicly oriented things (sword & sorcery popularity is an outgrowth of science fiction sort of connection). {No flames please. I am trying to indicate a viewpoint or theory that some folks have, not determine the actual origins of S&S.} Consider (what I can remember of) the theme song to the movie 'Heavy Metal' (chorus that is) "take a ride (ride ride ride ride {echo}) on heavy metal it's the only way that you can traval down that road satisfied (...) on heavy metal baby won't you ride, ride it until it explodes" pieces of verse include "you can hedge your bet on a clean corvette to get you there right on time". I would suggest that the road refered to above is (among other things) the road to a technological society. I hope that this doesn't seem like a whole lot to say not much.
