This is not alwayes true. It is correct that the option -c produce
the context diff, known to patch,  IIF the diff is a berkeley  version of
the diff. 

The standard SysV diff does not support option -c.

But I know that a public domain version of diff, that does support -c
has been posted to the net about an year ago.

I received  a program called cdiff that  operates as a  front end to diff
producing the context diff required.  If anyone wants it, just  drop me a
line and I'll mail it to you.

At this point I looked to uunet to see if such a beastie was, in fact,
archived there. I find that there is a listing for diffc under
comp.sources.unix.  Thanks to one and all for their help.
