In response to request for restaurant recommendations: There aren't
too many where you won't find tourists at this time of the year.
Solomon Grundy's on the Berkeley Marina has good fresh seafood
and a wonderful black bean soup
Further out, Mudd's in San Ramon (about 40 miles from SF) located
on several acres of gardens where they get all their vegetables.
They have a good French cooked (raw in the middle) salmon.
Cliff House (lots of tourists) is fun for brunch in the omelet
parlor. They have good clam chowder. Put your name on the
list and stroll the beach for an hour.
India House and Caravansery are good for Indian food.
Modesto Lanzone's at Ghiradelli Square has excellent Italian food.
There is also a good Hungarian restaurant at Ghiradelli Square, but
I forget the name.
Jackson Cafe in Chinatown has authentic Chinese food, as well as
regular fare for very reasonable prices. Not too many tourists,
but lots of local Chinese.
Beethoven's on Union Street has good German food.
Spenger's in Berkeley has very good, very cheap seafood, but it
is extremely crowded. I've seen waits up to 2 hours!
Around Berkeley there are all kinds of funky little places
(Homemade Cafe on Sacramento St for breakfast, Mary's Place,
Fondue Fred's, numerous coffee shops, and try Yogurt Park
for an afternoon treat).
I'm getting homesick -- I better stop now.asente@decwrl.UUCP (Paul Asente) (08/07/83)
One of my favorite restaurants in San Francisco is Squid's on McAllister Street near the Civic Center. Yes, they specialize in squid but have a number of non-squid dishes for the faint of heart. Lots of seafood on the menu in general. This is considered THE place to go before a night of New Wave dancing, etc. The decor is very New Wave (everything is pink and black) and most of the waiters fit in with the image of the place. Very good food, the best squid I've ever had, reasonable prices, and a wonderful selection of music on the juke box (everything from New Wave to Elvis). DON'T go here if you're in a hurry though; the service can best be described as casual.

...or Henry Chung's Hunan restaurant 'round the corner from the
Mabuhay Gardens & On Broadway. Looks like a greasy spoon at first
glance but it's really a world class restaurant.
Try the smoked chicken or duck.
