[net.cooks] shot ounces

dlp@akgua.UUCP (09/22/83)

There are one and a half (1+1/2) ounces in a shot glass. That is, a shot
is one and a half. Some shot glasses have a line on them for the
shot level, but will hold a little more. An ounce is 28 ml.
If you are real adventurous you should convert your favorite recepies (sp)
to weights and mls. For instance a cup of sifted flour is NOT the
same as a cup of flour sifted. However, 100 grams of flour is the same
whether sifted or not. Most Europeans cook by weight. There are many
advantages in repeatibility and uniformity of results.

Sorry to disappoint everyone but there is no specific number of ounces
in a shot. A few years back I either read in a paper or saw on TV that
the department of weights and measures does not have a standard for
a shot. A jigger, on the other hand, is and must be 1 1/2 oz.
