[comp.sources.wanted] In search of: PC backup/restore using TCP/IP

) ) (04/13/90)

The organization that I work for has a large number of IBM PC's and
compatibles. Many of these are linked to our VAX (running 4.3BSD
Unix) with TCP/IP running over an ethernet. We are currently looking
for a relatively inexpensive method for backing-up and restoring files
and file trees on the PC hard disks. Our current idea is to do the
backups over the ethernet to an Exabyte 8mm tape drive connected to
the VAX.

I am looking for any information regarding software (commercial or
public domain) that allows backups and restores to and from PC's over
a TCP/IP link to Unix mass-storage devices. Our requirementes are:

	* The software must be able to reliably backup and restore
both individual files and complete file trees from a PC hard
	  disk.

	* The PC software must act as a client which sends and
receives data from a Unix server.

It is preferable that the software have the following features, but
not necessary:

        * The PC backup/restore client would connect to an FTP server
	  interface on the Unix end.

	* It would be preferable that the system include source code,
because we might need to modify for our local system.

	* An easy-to-use user interface is desirable for the PC end,
	  but is not necessary.

If you have any information on software that can do this, please
contact me at the email addresses below (please use email, because I
do not read these newsgroups). If we cannot find any products to do
this, we will likely "glue" the programs "ftp" and "pax" together on
the PC to create a backup/restore program (and offer it to the net
afterwards). Needless to say, it would save us much effort if this
software already exists.
