I'm looking for a program I can use in a pipe that will double buffer (ie, use some shared memory scheme to have one process read while the other writes) and count blocks. I'd like to use it with tar, cpio, cat, etc to 1) make the tape stream better, and 2) allow use of multiple tapes by prompting when one is at the end.
