[comp.sources.wanted] needed: periodic directory content monitor

dpl@unix.cis.pitt.edu (David P. Lithgow) (07/03/90)

To all netnews readers,

We have persistent problems with sloppy roots dropping junk
files into system directories, and the occasional operator
"rm *" problems. We'd like to detect and correct.

I'm looking for a software program - which I've heard of,
but don't know the name - which will run (e.g.) once a week, and
report on any changes made to a list of "system" directories (whose
contents we try to keep clear of local code & files). We reserve
/usr/local/{etc,bin,lib...} for locally-added commands,files,packages.

I'm about to write this program unless I can locate it
on the net - just the convenience at upgrade time will justify
the effort...
