[comp.sources.wanted] In-memory compress

I am looking for the existence/availability of an "in-memory"
compression utility. I.e., I would like a subroutine equivalent of
compress(1) that takes a buffer and returns an compressed one.

If anyone knows of such a routine, I would appreciate pointers,
or actual code.
