Where did the chocolate "needhams" get their name from?

While visiting Maine a few months ago, my brother and his wife were
constantly reminded that their last name was the same as that of a
chocolate prevalent in the area.  Unable to stand the suspense, they
finally purchased a box of "needhams" from a local confectioner.  It
turned out that "needhams" are little filled chocolates whose filling
contains loads of sugar, coconut, and potatoes (yes, potatoes).

Wondering what strange influence my ancestors had on Maine, I ask:
where did these chocolates get their name from?  Do they have anything
to do with Needham, Mass?
