[comp.sources.wanted] Mailer-proof encoding of files in the Unix environment

lwv27@CAS.BITNET (12/20/90)

Does anyone have an archive or at least an article describing the various
mail-proofing techniques ? I know that there is an updated uuencode/decode
out there which generates 'safer' files than the std uuencode that comes with
most Unixes - has that version been picked up by ATT/Sun, BSD, or OSF for
future distribution? Also, I believe there are several programs which attempt
to break a largeish file into smaller pieces and then allows the user
to put them back together. I was wondering about some of these for the Unix
environment. I just recently received several "broken" files from folks
and each one had to be hand pasted together, and then I discovered that
the file either would not uudecode or after decoding could not be uncompressed/
untar-ed. In one case, an acquaintence and I went round and round trying
various techniques for a week or more trying to exchange a couple of text
files but getting line truncation, line breaking, character mangling, etc.

Surely there is a better way!
