Not too long ago, I remember seeing a program that 'fixed up' tar archives that were produced on BSD Unix systems with 32 character file names so that they could be extracted on a System V machine with 14 character file names. Of course I didn't save the program as it went by in one of the source newsgroups, thinking that I'd never need the program. Ha!
