[comp.sources.wanted] File Compression Software: SUMMARY

cmercer@helios.lerc.nasa.gov (Carolyn R. Mercer) (02/27/91)

Many thanks to those of you who replied to my request for file compression
software.

In brief, most responders use PKZip, are happy with it, and have never used
anything else.

PKZip is available from PKWare, who also sells a data compression library.
The library is $295 and has no runtime royalties; a distribution license
is required for PKZip and is priced on an individual basis. PKware's phone
number is (414)354-8699.

The other frequently mentioned package is LHArc, which is available free
even for commercial applications. It is available from wuarchive.wustl.edu
under mirrors/msdos. This is the package that I have chosen, and it is
adequate for my purpose whi0 bytes down to about 300000, and LHarc fits the
bill. I have heard that a C-callable version of LHarc exists, but as yet
I've been unable to find it. If anyone has information on this, I'd
appreciate hearing about it.

Robert Jung's ARJ was also recommended by several people and is available for
sale as a callable subroutine from Turbo C, Turbo C++, Quick C and
Prime ANSI C. Special thanks to Robert for his assistance.

Another freelance programmer, Graham Toal, has written some callable C functions
for file compression/decompression. He will post them to alt.sources when
they're finished.

Finally, PAK251.exe is available from wsmr-simtel20.army.mil as shareware.
It also works fine.

Thanks again to those who responded.

I believe non-comercial, non-governmental, non-organizational users who make
no money etc are not required to register for PKZip, however I would
recommend it.

Actually, the C and Turbo Pascal source is avilable. The three places I'd
suggest to look are: Simtel20 , Chyde or Garbo (sorry, I don't remember the
IP node), or wuarchive.wustl.edu. At chyde, its in /pc/source (I think).

The source code for LHarc is available from SIMTEL20:

Directory PD1:<MSDOS.ARC-LBR>
 Filename Type Length Date Description
==============================================
LHARCSRC.ARC B 56714 890628 TurboC/OPTASM source code for LHarc & its SFX
MODLHSRC.ARC B 3658 890630 Modify LHarc source code for MASM/TASM
