A package I'm working on allows it's users to hand the system a
file name. Given only that filename, we need to determine what
type of device is connected to it. Using a table of filenames to
device types is awkward and not terribly portable. The best suggestion
we received from a vendor so far was "Try various operations on
the device. Based on which fail and which succeed you can figure out
what the device is."
Has anyone done this? Particularly for SYS V, but I'll take anything
that points me in the right direction. Or any other decent solution.
Thanks, in advance.
