Currently at GWU we use multiple ksh scripts to add/remove users in /etc/passwd and do other useful things. Currently, we're looking at replacing the software with something with a few more bells and whistles. Naturally, we'd rather get something public (and presumably checked out a little) off the net if possible rather than writing our own. The present system supports o YP/NIS (by only allowing use on one machine, then doing yppush) o Addition/removal of blocks of users according to a class ID prefix or one-at-a-time o Creating/removing directories via rsh o Printing "tickets" for class accounts, so instructor can hand out IDs in class o A separate "activation" step, so disk space isn't created and account "loginable" until user provides proof of fees paid. This step creates a unique password. In addition, we'd like something that keeps a data base of as many as we can get of o Date account created o Date account will expire (even if have to expire manually) o Department user belongs to o Type of account (faculty, staff, student, etc.) o All accounts belonging to a single user (some, mostly faculty, have several) o A soft disk usage limit A nice user interface is desirable too, of course. This seems to be a type of package that not many people produce for free distribution, as opposed to important applications like star trek games :-). Another staff member and I located mcp and diskhog2 on uunet, but that's all we found so far. Can anyone suggest a package (or share war stories about writing their own)? This is going to run on a Sun 3 with SunOS 4.1. Thanks in advance -- Sheryl Coppenger SEAS Computing Facility Staff sheryl@seas.gwu.edu The George Washington University (202) 994-6853
