I have seen two completely different dressings both of which were called Russian dressing. One is like a tangy, thick, and sweet tomato based dressing (no mayonaise) and the other is very similar to Thousand Island dressing. The main difference between the latter and Thousand Island I believe is that Thousand Island has pickle relish in it. We used to make creamy French dressing that was very similar to the latter Russian dressing by mixing mayonaise and ketchup. We would turn it into Thousand Island by adding pickle relish. Another interesting variation on this theme is to make a dressing from mayonaise and taco sauce. All of these dressings are related and this is probably the source of the confusion.
